Wonderful Week for Liverpool

Liverpool maintained their one point lead at the top of the BPL table by beating Blackburn 3-1 at Ewood Park.

The scoreline did not reflect the whole story. Liverpool were made to work hard by a Blackburn side in deep trouble.

The first hafl saw Liverpool failing to get the foothold of the game and ended 0-0. It was the second half when Xavi Alonso opened the floodgate. With Torres out for another few weeks or so, one would wonder where the goals would come especially when Keane is struggling to find the net on a regular basis.

Wanted away Benayoun scored Liverpool second with a superb piece of skill. Santa Cruz gave Blackburn hope before Gerrard sealed the game with Liverpool third.

I would like Rafa to give Benayoun more playing time especially Liverpool fail to find the net against Fulham and West Ham. The former Hammer will provide extra craft and vision to create goals for Liverpool with the loss of Torres.

=====================================================================================
A second string Liverpool side produced a positive display at PSV to top the group knocking off Athletico Madrid.

Goals from Babel, Riera and Ngog was enough to see of PSV 3-1 after trailing a goal down.

With the victory, Liverpool have the advantage of playing the second leg of the knockout stage at home.

It was rather perfect 4 days for the Reds having scored 6 goals in 2 away games.

This will certainly give Rafa's team the confident of challenging for honours for both front.

With Hull coming to Anfield this weekend, Liverpool will ill afford another 0-0 soreline against the Tigers. This is an ideal chance for Liverpool to pull further from Man Utd who travel to White Hart Lane to face in form Spurs. Spurs may just nick something from that game.

It all remain to be seen if Liverpool can carry the great form into this weekend game before they face Arsenal at the Emirates next week.

Liverpool Great Escape

I switched off the TV set after 89 minutes. I was disappointed with what I saw. The performance was a load of crap!

With defeat starting at Liverpool, the Reds got out of jail when the referee awarded a highly debatable penalty 3 minutes into stoppage time.

Liverpool lack ideas and creativity as they struggled to create clear cut chances. It was a sucker punch when Madrid took the lead after a brillant counter attack.

As in the Spurs match, Liverpool were dominant in term of possession but fail to make their chances count.

My blood really boil as the match progresses. I was expecting a tight encounter with the Reds winning by the odd goal.

Rafa Benitez said in the post match interview that Liverpool should have won the match given the number of chances. Sorry Rafa, if your team can't score, you can't win. It is as simple as that.

Since the start of the season, Liverpool has been struggling in matches despite their comeback wins. The only match which they won comfortably was the one against PSV. Other than that, the Reds has not been impressive.

This weekend fixture will see Liverpool take on West Brom. I expect to see them winning at least by two clear goals.

Liverpool 3 v PSV 1

Liverpool gained maximum points in their quest for the Champion League after cruising to a 3-1 win against a hapless PSV side.

Gerrard's 100th goal for his club and Keane's first for the Reds ensure Liverpool took a giant step to qualifying for the second group stage. Althetico Madrid have also 6 points from two games.

PSV's game plan was to starved Liverpool by packing the midfield and defence. However their plan was backfired as early as the 4th mintue. Gerrard's corner found Torres who sweep the ball but was parried away by Issakson. The ball found Kuyt who made no mistake from close range.

Liverpool took control of the game. They were rewarded the second when Torres's low cross to Keane who took it first time. The ball went past the PSV keeper into the net much to the relief of Keane. His first goal for Liverpool after failing to score in his 10 matches.

Second half was the same for the Reds. It took Liverpool 72th minute to struck the third goal. Gerrard's rocket free kick had Issakson beaten all the way.

PSV scored a consolaton goal a minute later. The goal cost Liverpool top spot in the table. It has been a great week for Liverpool, Gerrard and Keane.

Come Saturday, Liverpool will face a tough tie at the Stadium of Manchester where Robino and Co is waiting.

Gerrard's Doubled Gunned Marseille

Liverpool got to a winning start to their Champion League campaign. It was a typical victory by Liverpool. They way Liverpool played and won the game was identical to that of the match against Man Utd.

Liverpool went a goal down after Marseille's skipper Cana was put throught by a defence splitting pass from Cheyrou. Despite the goal, the Reds did not hang their head down. Instead they battled back. Just when the home fan was still celebrating, Liverpool launched an attack of their own. Torres robbed the ball off a Marseille's player and passed the ball to Kuyt. Kuyt laid to the supporting Gerrard who from an impossible position curled the ball past the helpless keeper for the equalizer. Liverpool took 3 minutes to come back.

From there, Liverpool then began to impose themselves. In the 32th minutes, Babel was brought down and penalty was awarded. On came Gerrard. He scored but was ordered to retake the penalty. Gerrard held his nerve and made no mistake. What strong character the skipper bring in him.

The remaining first half was farily comfortable for the visitor. Marseille started the second half with more urgency and purpose.

The host have 4 chances to win the game but their chief striker Niang missed two great opportunities and bring the game on level terms. Reina made two vital saves to keep the 3 points for Liverpool.

Overall, it was a vintage performance from Liverpool. There is a new never say die attitude from the Reds. This will certainly angur well for this season campaign.

The Reds next opponent in the BPL is against new boys Stoke City. Based on their last two performance, 3 points should be an easy task. With Chelsea meeting Man Utd this week, Liverpool look set to top the table with a win against Stoke.

Liverpool 1 Standard Liege 0

I would call it was a garbage display from Liverpool. We will have to look back to the first leg when Reina saves us twice otherwise Liverpool will be dead and buried based on last night performance.

It was real frustrating watching the 90 minutes of the game. Depsite home ground advantage and big name players, the Reds failed to craved out any chances. The opponent goalkeeper must be shocked that he was not as busy as many though he would be.

Liverpool failed to penerate the Belgian defence throughout normal time. Credit must be given to them for putting great resistance. They won the high balls and picked up the loose balls faster than Liverpool.

After 4 matches into the new season, Liverpool still look less convincing as a team. It took Liverpool over 100 minutes to breach Standard Liege's defence, thanks to Dirk Kuyt goal. If Liverpool struggle at home against Boro and Standard Liege, I wonder what would happen to the Reds when Man Utd comes to town.

With Gerrard ruled out due to a groin operation, things do not look good for Liverpool especially vital games against Villa this weekend and Man Utd the following weekend.

Reina Saves Liverpool

If any Liverpool fans were to watch the telecast of the game, they would be shocked by Liverpool's performance. Liverpool could find themselves staring into elimination just after 20 minutes.

The Belgium Campion could have gone 1-0 up after 9 minutes when a header hit the post and bounced on the line before Reina parried away to safety. When the cross was made, the Liverpool's defence went AWOL.

On 19 minutes, the referee awarded a penalty to Standard Leige after an alleged handball by Dossena inside the box. Replay showed that the incident took place outside the penalty box. However justice prevailed when Reina dived the correct direction to make a save.

The Belgium team took the game to Liverpool from the first minute and it remain throughout the whole 90 minutes. Liverpool do not have a decent shot at goal.

Basically, there was no conviction from Liverpool. The defence in sixes and sevens whenever a cross was whipped in. Agger was beaten to the ball easily. There was no bite from the midfield with the absence of Gerrard who was among the subsitute. Alonso was guilty was losing the ball and poor free kick. Generally Alonso had a poor game which explain why Rafa need Barry in the team to provide the drive when Gerrard is not playing. Perhaps Alonso is overrated.

The much talked about Torres-Keane partnership was non existent. The lack of understanding between the pairing is evident. Torres was heavily guarded while Keane was running like a headless chicken.

Like what Rafa said "It was a poor performance but a good result" to take to Anfield. With the BPL just 2 days to go, if the last night performace is anything to suggest, then we are in for another disappointed season.
